Two months already!

Hello!
I love you and miss you all a lot!

I'm doing pretty good this week. Lots happened so I'll try to write it all in my email! Love you!

1. How is your companion doing after the wisdom tooth extraction?

My companion got his wisdom teeth out on Wednesday and he did pretty good. There were no problems with it so he just got it taken out. Then for the whole day we pretty much did nothing, because we had a meeting to go to at 2, and after that he had the dentist at 5, so we didn't go out working on Wednesday at all! We went back to the pension and he slept and I had to call the district and do verifications because he is the district president, so that was interesting. Then on Thursday morning that was interesting too because he got to sleep in, so I had to wake up at 6:30 to excersize, and study all morning by my self.

2. Next week is General Conference! We will have three new apostles being called! Are you going to be able to watch more than one session?

Yes, General Conference is coming up! We get to watch all 5 sessions of it in Spanish in our chapel, except for the Priesthood session, because for us that will start at 9 pm, and we have to be back home by then. But yeah, 3 new apostles is pretty sweet! We kept hearing rumors about how Elder Scott died, but now we know it's true!

3. Are you both missionaries just for one ward, or for the entire area of a stake? Do you eat in restaurants besides the member's homes?  Tell us more about your area.

We are in the Constitucion 1 area, so everyday we take the bus down to Villa 21, and we do most of our work in there because everyone knows everyone so it's way more effective then knocking on doors. We are in the La Boca chapel, and we have 2 other missionaries in there with us. Our ward is a pretty good size, like 120 people. The members do feed us a lot but on p-days or when a lunch fails we have an hour to go eat anywhere, and we usually eat at this Peruvian restaurant that is really good! They have this rice dish called "chaufa" and its SO good! It's just rice with like peppers and meat, but it tastes great.

4. Detail how was your week, all the good, the bad and the ugly. :)

This was kind of a crappy week. We're both fine but sometimes it's sad. We find someone who seems really interested and they progress for a while but then they don't want to talk to us. so that's hard. Like, we had this lady named Claudia and she is awesome! Her daughters are members and she came to Church last Sunday and everything, but she didn't this Sunday because she got a new job so she works most of the time now. We don't really see her because she works so much and how she works so much she isn't keeping commitments, so that's sad.

5. Tell us something different that happened this week.

We went to the mission home this past Friday and I actually got A LOT of mail! Thank you for sending so many letters! We had a reunion with the mission president about how we are doing in our first couple weeks here in Argentina

6. How do you feel reciting the First Vision and the Spirit that it brings?

Yeah, I recite the First Vision all the time and it's so powerful! One of the most powerful moments for me is when we are talking to someone who doesn't seem interested at all, which is like 99 percent of the people we talk to. We had a time when this person wasn't interested, I looked at them straight in the eyes and said:
"I am only a 19 year old kid who is here in Argentina. in a different country with a different language. I am a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am here because I know this Church is true, because I want to bring others into the truth of this gospel, because I know it to be true. I know this Church is directed by Jesus Christ, and even tho I'm only 19, I am out here doing the best I can to bring others to this knowledge."
That was a powerful moment even to remember.

7. What advice from the scriptures you have been studying later that you would like us to follow, learn or improve?

In the scriptures this week I would recommend the Parable of the Talents. because in our meeting with the Mission President, he told us to read it and think about it this week. and its true. Don't hide away your talents. Use them to strengthen yourself and the Church. and that's in Matthew 25, after the Parable of the ten virgins.

8. Does your companion push you good? That is necessary for you to be the best missionary you can be!

Yeah, my companion is awesome! He pushes me good and we work hard, but we have to work harder here. just because some people are so hard to talk to. Everyone is Catholic, and they don't want to hear anything about us or they simply just don't want to change their religion because their life is fine the way it is now. so that's annoying! It's like, you could totally be happier with us! Come on!

Estou muito bem esta semana. Um monte de coisas aconteceram, então vou escrever neste email. Amo vocês!

1. Como está seu companheiro depois de extrair o dente do ciso?

Meu companheiro teve o dente arrancado na quarta e está bem. Não teve problemas, então só fomos lá para ele arrancar. Aí praticamente não fizemos nada aquele dia, porque tínhamos um horário marcado para as 2, e depois fomos ao dentista às 5, e nem fomos trabalhar na quarta. Fomos de volta para a pensão e ele foi dormir, e eu tinha que fazer algumas ligações para o distrito para verificações porque ele é o líder do distrito, e foi bem interessante. Daí na quinta de manhã também foi interessante, porque ele dormiu até mais tarde, e eu acordei às 6:30 para fazer exercícios, e estudar durante a manhã sozinho.

2. Esta semana teremos a Conferência Geral! Teremos 3 novos apóstolos chamados! Vocês poderão assistir mais que uma sessão da Conferência?

Sim, a Conferência Geral está vindo! Nós assistiremos todas as 5 sessões em espanhol em nossa capela, menos a sessão do sacerdócio que começará às 9 da noite, e temos que estar em casa neste horário. Mas, sim, três apóstolos é incrível! Nós ouvimos rumores de que Elder Scott havia falecido, mas agora sabemos que é verdade.

3. Vocês dois servem uma ala ou toda a estaca? Vocês comem em restaurantes além das casas dos membros?

Nós estamos agora na área Constitucion 1, então todos os dias pegamos este ônibus até a Vila 21, e trabalhamos a maior parte do tempo ali, porque todos se conhecem então é mais eficiente do que bater nas portas. Nós vamos a capela La Boca, e temos outros dois missionários lá conosco. Nossa ala é bem grandinha, com cerca de 120 pessoas. Os membros nos alimentam muito, mas nos dias de p-day e nos dias que algum almoço é cancelado, temos uma hora para comer em qualquer lugar e geralmente vamos nesse restaurante peruano que é ótimo! Eles têm esse prato que é chamado “chaufa” que é tão bom! É basicamente arroz, pimentão e carne, mas muito saboroso.

4. Conte mais sobre sua semana, as coisas boas e ruins.

Esta foi uma semana não muito boa para o trabalho. Nós estamos bem, mas às vezes é triste. Nós encontramos alguém que parece estar realmente interessado e eles progridem por um tempo, e depois não querem mais conversar conosco, então é difícil. Tipo, nós temos essa senhora chamada Claudia e ela é ótima, as filhas são membros e ela veio à igreja semana passada, mas ela não veio esta semana porque começou um novo trabalho, e agora ela não tem mais tempo. Nós nem a vemos mais porque ela está trabalhando tanto e não está mais compromissada, então isso é triste.

5. Conte algo diferente que aconteceu esta semana.

Nós fomos até a casa da missão na sexta, e eu peguei um monte de cartas! Obrigado por enviar várias! Tivemos uma reunião com o presidente da missão sobre como estamos indo em nossas duas primeiras semanas aqui na Argentina.

6. Como você se sente cada vez que precisa citar a Primeira Visão, e o Espírito que sente?

Sim, eu cito a Primeira Visão o tempo todo e é tão poderoso! Um dos momentos mais marcantes pra mim é quando eu converso com alguém que parece não estar interessado, o que são 99% das pessoas que conversamos. Aconteceu algo assim, e eu olhei para a pessoa diretamente nos olhos e disse:

“Eu sou um rapaz de apenas 19 anos que veio aqui para a Argentina, um país diferente com uma língua diferente, um missionário de A Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dis. Estou aqui porque eu sei que esta igreja é verdadeira, porque eu quero trazer outros para a verdade deste evangelho, porque eu sei que ele é verdadeiro. Eu sei que esta Igreja é dirigida por Jesus Cristo, e mesmo que eu só tenha 19 anos, estou aqui fazendo o melhor que posso para que outros conheçam estas verdades.”

Este foi um momento bem marcante para mim.

7. Qual conselho ou escritura você tem estudado ultimamente que você gostaria que nós estudássemos mais esta semana?

A escritura que recomendo esta semana é a Parábola dos Talentos, porque em nossa reunião com o presidente, ele nos pediu que estudássemos. Não escondam seus talentos. Usem-os para fortalecerem vocês mesmos e a Igreja, e esta parábola se encontra em Mateus 25, após a parábola das dez virgens.

8. Seu companheiro faz você trabalhar bastante? Isso é necessário para você se tornar o melhor missionário que pode ser!

Sim, meu companheiro é incrível! Ele me faz trabalhar bastante e realmente trabalhamos duro, mas aqui nesta área temos que trabalhar ainda mais, porque as pessoas são bem difíceis de conversarmos. Todos são católicos, e eles não querem sequer ouvir nada sobre nós e não querem mudar sua religião porque dizem que suas vidas estão bem do jeito que estão.Tipo, eu sempre quero lhes dizer que conosco, vocês estarão ainda mais felizes, vamos lá!

Foi uma boa semana, mas eu preciso ir. Amo vocês, tenham uma ótima semana!

Surprise to the birthday boy

Freddy got to Argentina on the 8th of september of 2015. I had sent a package with a Brazilian carrot cake while he was still at the MTC so he could celebrate his birthday with his friends there before his travel, once I couldn't send anything to Buenos Aires.

Then I discovered this service called Missionaries Packages Argentina, that mail packages within Argentina, and send a birthday box to him, which was delivered on his first p-day. It was nice that they took a pic and sent me.

Two weeks later, Janet, Elder Jason Kelly mother, Elder Ayres' companion, sent a package to her son and also to our son. That was so nice of her of doing that!

New week in Buenos Aires!

Hello!

It's great to hear from you! I like how you are making a question's list. That makes it super nice every week. 

1. How was your week? What was the best thing that happened to you? Did you have any event, or meeting, interview or contact that was an great experience?

The week was pretty awesome! At least the beginning of the week. We were averaging like 10 lessons a day! And that's high because our goal for every day is at least 5! I'm getting better at my Spanish and we speak it most of the time. This week my companion needs to get his wisdom teeth out so we won't be able to work for, like, a whole day. but that's good because I'm so so so tired! So I'll try to sleep too after I study and do everything I have to in the morning.

2. How is the weather, is it still cold in the mornings? Is it raining there, do you need to go through any flooded areas?

The weather is good. It hasn't rained much at all this week except for right now, it's drizzling! We don't have any flooded areas or anything so far. 

3. What about the treats for your birthday you got? 

Yes, it was good! Lots of sweets, so that was bad! I just shared it with my companion. The cookies and the alfajores are really good. The alfajores are amazing!! I love them, they have doce de leite in the middle of them! 

4. What about the earthquake, did you guys feel anything there where you are?

I didn't even know there was an earthquake! We didn't feel anything. or if we did, we were probably on a bus or sleeping or something but I have no idea.

5. How are your shoes holding on? What about your feet, legs and blisters and stuff? 

My shoes are good, I just need to break them in more. because I just get blisters now but my companion said that's fine. it happens to everyone because we walk to much. He said after his first 3 months he didn't even get a blister anymore. and I am using the stuff I brought for it when I need it! 

6. How many families are you teaching? Are the members good to set appointments and go with you? How do you feel speaking Spanish all the time?

We currently have 3 investigators. 

Claudia, a lady whose daughters are members and we are helping her to understand the law of chastity and Word of Wisdom, but she really wants to get baptized, so that's awesome!

Maria, she's this lady who was our miracle for the week because she was so awesome! Part of her family is LDS so she's heard of us. Teaching her is awesome because she accepts everything and has no problems with things we teach so far. I hope she get's baptized!

Then we have Carolina, and she's kind of tricky. because she's interested and married but her husband doesn't want her talking to us, so unfortunately we might have to drop her.

7. Any scary, sad or dangerous moments?

Not really, except for I did get robbed this week! 

It was weird! Don't be alarmed! She didn't take much. It was this really crappy looking girl that came over and stole pretty much just my drink I'd just bought. It was only like a ARG $15 peso soda so I wasn't mad but it was weird. She came up and was acting all weird then she put her hand on my chest and said that she wanted my drink. Then I took my left hand off my soda to push away her nasty hand from my chest and she stole my drink and ran off. But yeah, I was robbed! So that was fun. I'm fine tho. nothing happened to me.

8. What kind of foods you have already eaten there that you like? What are those you don't like?

Most of the food that we eat is rice, plain pasta, and this thing called milanesa which I don't think I spelled right. but it's this weird thing that's half chicken and half beef. so it's not the healthiest. It's hard because they have no vegetables here and most of the food is like fried or baked.

Something also interesting about the villa is that I speak to more Paraguayans and Bolivians then Argentinians! They said it's because the Argentinians live outside the villas because the villas are for the most poor.

So yeah, we eat most Paraguayan and Bolivian food all the time, but the members are awesome! We are also planning on marrying this one other couple, but that's gonna be complicated so I won't write much about it yet!

É muito bom ouvir de vocês! Eu gosto que você faz uma lista de perguntas, isso me ajuda a escrever toda semana.

1. Como foi sua semana? Qual foi a melhor coisa que aconteceu com você? Você teve algum evento ou reunião, entrevista ou contato que tenha sido uma ótima experiência?

A semana foi super ótima! Pelo menos no começo da semana. Nós estávamos com uma média de 10 lições por dia! E isso é alto porque nossa meta é ter pelo menos 5! Estou bem melhor em meu espanhol e falamos a maior parte do tempo. Esta semana meu companheiro precisa extrair os dentes do ciso, e nós não poderemos trabalhar por um dia inteiro, e isso é bom porque estou super cansado. Então vou tentar dormir também após estudar e fazer tudo que preciso de manhã.

2. Como está o clima, ainda está frio de manhã? E chove muito? Você tem que cruzar áreas inundadas?

O clima está bom. Não tem chovido muito com exceção deste momento, está caindo a maior água! Nós não temos nenhuma área inundada ou nada do tipo até agora.

3. Como foi receber os quitutes de aniversário?

Sim, foi bom! Muitos doces, o que é mau! Eu compartilhei com meu companheiro. Os biscoitos e os alfajores são muito bons. Os alfajores são incriveis! Eu amo, eles têm doce de leite no meio!

4. E o terremoto, você sentiu onde vocês estão? Teve um terremoto de 8.3 no Chile e a missão Mendoza na Argentina sentiu e muitos outros lugares.

Eu nem sabia que havia tido um terremoto! Nós não sentimos, mas se sim, provavelmente deveríamos estar num ônibus ou dormindo ou algo do tipo, porque não tinha ideia.

5. Como estão os sapatos sobrevivendo às andanças? E seus pés? Muitos calos e machucados?

Meus sapatos são bons, eu só preciso acostumar um pouco mais, porque tenho vários calos e bolhas nos pés porque andamos muito. Meu companheiro disse que isso é normal, e que após uns três meses, a gente acostuma mais e nem fica com calos mais. Sim, estou usando os produtos e tudo que trouxe para cuidar disso.

6. Quantas famílias vocês estão ensinando? Os membros são bons em marcar horários e ir com vocês? Como você se sente falando espanhol todo o tempo agora?

Nós atualmente temos 3 investigadoras:

Claudia, uma senhora que as filhas são membros e estão ajudando-a a entender a lei da castidade e a palavra de sabedoria, mas ela realmente quer ser batizada, então isso é ótimo!

Maria, ela é nossa senhora milagre essa semana, porque ela é tão maravilhosa! Parte de sua família é membro da igreja então ela ouviu sobre nós antes, e ela gosta e aceita tudo que a ensinamos e não vê problemas. Eu espero que ela seja batizada!

E nós também temos a Carolina, e é uma situação complicada. Ela está interessada e é casada, mas o marido não quer que ela converse conosco, então talvez tenhamos que parar com as discussões.

7. Algum momento ruim, assustador ou triste?

Não, exceto que eu fui roubado essa semana!

Foi muito estranho! Não se preocupe! Ela não levou muito. Foi uma garota realmente toda suja que veio e roubou praticamente meu refrigerante que eu tinha acabado de comprar.  Era somente uma garrafa de 15 pesos argentinos e eu não fiquei bravo, mas foi estranho. Ela veio agindo toda estranha, e colocou a mão dela no meu peito e disse que queria minha bebida. Aí eu tirei minha mão esquerda da garrafa para tirar a mão imunda dela da minha camisa, e ela pegou a garrafa e saiu correndo. Então foi isso, eu fui roubado! Mas foi engraçado. Estou bem, nada aconteceu comigo.

8. Quais tipos de comidas você já comeu aí que você gosta? E aquelas que você não gosta?

A maioria das comidas que comemos aqui é arroz, macarrão, e esse negócio chamado milanesa, que provavelmente escrevi errado, mas é esquisito porque é metade carne e metade frango, e não parece ser o mais saudável. É difícil porque não há legumes e saladas aqui e a maioria da comida é frita ou assada.

Outra coisa interessante na villa é que falamos com mais paraguaios e bolivianos do que argentinos. Eles dizem que é porque os argentinos vivem fora das vilas porque elas são somente para os mais pobres. Ou seja, comemos a maioria da comida paraguaia e boliviana.

Mas os membros são ótimos! Nós também estamos planejando casar este casal, mas é complicado e não vou escrever sobre eles ainda.

First week in Argentina!

(Mom sent a list with questions and he copied and pasted before his answers)

All right, mom! I’m going to go through your emails and answer all of your questions!

1. How was the trip, was it okay? Did you get sick? Everyone got there okay?

The trip was good, just really long! Everyone seemed to get here ok. I got jet lag pretty bad and I’ve been so tired this past week. I’m also getting really car sick and getting big headaches but I’m doing fine. We’re working hard!

2. How is your health since you got there? Are you adapting well so far? What about the weather?

I’m adapting well. I’m in the Constitución 1 area and we are pretty much in the heart of the city, so we can do things just fine like drink the tap water. The weather has been good, except for lately in the mornings, it has been SUPER cold, like freezing and it’s hard to get out of bed to exercise, but we’re doing good with that. They gave us all blankets and covers in the mission home so we’re all set there!

3. How was the first contact/interview with President Ayre? He spoke so highly of you when we talked!

Talking to the President was awesome! Everyone says he is super nice and chill and I see it already! It’s all about working hard here though!

4. How is your apartment? Do you have hot water? And drinking water, how are you doing for that? How do you do your laundry?

My apartment is alright. It’s just like a one room apartment with one small bathroom and one small kitchen. Serious, they are like really small! We have hot water and everything but we need to shower sideways because the shower is so small! It’s pretty funny. We have a bunk bed and I sleep on the top because Elder Kelly sleep walks sometimes so it’s just for safety. I’ve been taking lots of pictures so don’t worry. We have a lady in our Ward that does our laundry for free any day of the week, that’s super nice!

5. What do you do in your area? Can you proselyte or you work just with member’s references? Please, talk about your schedule.

We do lots of things in this area but the most important thing is that we do everything with the members. We go proselyting, but whenever we teach a lesson, we need to have a member with us. The president doesn’t want us teaching lessons without a member, so we work a lot with member references. When we are walking between appointments, we talk to some occasional people on the street, but most of them want nothing to do with us. It’s sad. We actually had a lady freak out at us yesterday... We tried to talk to her and she just yelled out, in castellano really loud , “Get away from me!”… so that was sketchy, but we’re fine.

6. Is it very dangerous? Please tell me the truth and let me know how you feel about it.

We are in one of the most dangerous areas but I feel pretty good most of the time. We’re kept safe and we do a good job sticking to streets with lots of light and stuff, so we’re fine.

I will try to get pictures and stuff but I can’t take my camera anywhere because we will get robbed if I do! So like I can’t have it with me during the day, but I’m trying. We went to this Villa called “The Villa 31”! It’s crazy! It’s about a 30 x 5 block area that has about 70,000 people living in it! It’s not our area, but we had to go because Elder Kelly is the district leader and he had a baptismal interview to do in there so that was fun.

7. What about the food? Do you get dinners at member’s homes, or do you need to cook? How often?  

We NEVER cook! The members always feed and take care of us. We are working in an area called “The Villa”. It’s pretty much the “favelas”. Most of the people don’t have much but what they have, they give to us. They are SO awesome to us! I love them already!

8. How are you doing so far? Emotional, Physical, Spiritually… please let me know!

I’m doing pretty good. It’s been a rough first week because members have cancelled with us and we can’t do anything without them, but I’m good. It’s definitely hard. Most things we learned in the MTC we can’t use here, just because we never teach normal lessons. Most times, the “lessons” are us just talking to people on the street for 10ish minutes, but some of them can’t even read, so it’s hard.

9. How is your companion? Are you getting along okay?

Me and my companion are awesome! We are SO alike! He’s from Las Vegas, and we both LOVE basketball!! We have lots in common and he has said that, in 14 months he’s out on his mission, I’m one of his favorite companions so far, just because we work great together.

10. What about the members there?

Everyone is so nice to us here! We have, like, 110 members! It’s awesome! Everyone is just so loving and kind to the missionaries! Last Friday, on my birthday, we had a talent show at the church and us missionaries danced the cha cha slide for everyone! Everyone loved it and it increased eve more their love for us in the ward, so that was awesome!

We have a blast every day and I’m learning Spanish slowly but surely. I’ve already taught a couple lessons and bore my testimony multiple times. The Argentine accent is just hard to understand and Spanish is SO formal compared to Portuguese! Portuguese is way better, because in Spanish you have to put in filler words like “le, la, el” all the time! It’s annoying!

Thanks for everything! The support has been awesome and I do miss everyone! It’s hard work out here but it’s worth it!

Please, keep sending letters! You suppose to send them ALL to the mission home. We will only go to the Mission home maybe 2 times every 6 weeks so I won’t be able to get letters and other things that often. It’s hard and sucks, but that’s okay.

1. Como foi a viagem, foi tudo bem? Você se sentiu mal? Todo muito ficou bem?

A viagem foi boa, apenas super longa! Todo mundo parece ter chegado aqui bem. Eu fiquei super zonzo e estou cansado a semana inteira. Também me sinto super enjoado e com grandes dores de cabeça, mas estou bem. Nós estamos trabalhando duro!

2. Como está sua saúde desde que chegou aí? Está se adaptando bem? E o clima?

Estou me adaptando bem. Estou na área chamada Constitución 1, e basicamente é o coração da cidade, então podemos fazer coisas normais como beber a água da torneira, por exemplo. O clima está bom, apenas estes últimos dias pela manhã, está super FRIO! Congelando mesmo, e é tão difícil levantar da cama para fazer exercícios, mas nós estamos bem até o momento. Eles nos deram cobertores na casa da missão então temos o que precisamos aqui.

3. Como foi o primeiro contato/entrevista com o Presidente Ayre? Ele falou tão bem de você quando conversamos!

Conversar com o Presidente foi ótimo! Todos disseram que ele é super legal e gente fina e eu já vejo isso também. Mas todos trabalhamos bem duro por aqui!

4. Como é seu apartamento? Você tem água quente? E água potável, como você está fazendo pra ter? Como você lava as roupas?

Meu apartamento é okay. É um apartamento apenas com um quarto, um pequeno banheiro e uma pequena cozinha. Sério, os cômodos são super pequenos! Nós temos água quente e tudo mais, mas precisamos tomar banho de lado porque a área de banho é bem pequena. É engraçado! Nós temos uma beliche e eu durmo na cama de cima, porque Elder Kelly anda dormindo às vezes, então é somente para segurança. Eu estou tirando várias fotos, não se preocupe. Nós temos uma senhora em nossa Ala que lava nossas roupas qualquer dia da semana de graça, e isso é tão maravilhoso!

5. O que vocês fazem em sua área? Você podem fazer proselitismo ou apenas visitam as referências dos membros? Fale um pouco sobre sua agenda.

Nós fazemos muitas coisas nesta área, mas a coisa mais importante é que tudo o que fazemos, precisamos fazer com os membros. Nós fazemos proselitismo, mas sempre que vamos ensinar uma lição, precisamos ter um membro conosco. O Presidente não quer que ensinemos lições sem um membro presente, então trabalhamos muito com as referências dos membros. Quando andamos entre os horários marcados, nós ocasionalmente conversamos com as pessoas na rua, mas a maioria delas não quer saber de nós! É triste. Esta semana tivemos uma mulher gritando conosco quando tentamos conversar com ela, ela gritava “SAIAM de perto de mim!” Aquilo foi muito triste e assustador, mas estamos bem.

6. A área é perigosa? Por favor, me conte a verdade e como você se sente a respeito.

Nós estamos em uma das áreas mais perigosas de Buenos Aires, mas eu me sinto bem, na maioria das vezes. Nós estamos protegidos, e até agora fazemos um bom trabalho em andar somente pelas ruas bem iluminadas e tal, então estamos bem.

Eu tentarei enviar fotos, mas eu não posso levar minha câmera comigo a lugar nenhum, porque vamos ser roubados se eu o fizer. Eu não posso tê-la comigo durante o dia, mas vou tentar enviar fotos. Nós fomos nesta vila chamada “Vila 31”, é coisa de louco! É um conjunto de 30 por 5 quarteirões e eles têm cerca de 70 mil pessoas vivendo ali. Não faz parte de nossa área, mas precisávamos ir, porque Elder Kelly é líder de distrito e ele tinha uma entrevista batismal para fazer, então foi muito bom!

7. E a comida? Vocês têm almoços nas casas dos membros, ou precisam cozinhar muitas vezes?

Nós NUNCA cozinhamos! Os membros sempre servem almoço e cuidam de nós. Nós estamos trabalhando em uma área chamada “A Vila”, são praticamente favelas. A maioria das pessoas não têm muito, mas o que eles têm, eles nos dão. Eles são tão maravilhosos para nós! Eu já os amo tanto!

8. Como você está até agora? Emocionalmente, fisicamente e espiritualmente... por favor me diga!

Eu estou muito bem. Foi uma primeira semana bem difícil porque alguns membros cancelaram os horários e nós não podemos fazer muito sem eles, mas estou bem. É definitivamente difícil. A maioria das coisas que aprendi no CTM eu não uso aqui, porque nós nunca ensinamos lições normais. Muitas das “lições” que damos, muitas vezes são em conversas com as pessoas na rua mesmo, tipo uns 10 minutos, e muitos deles não sabem ler, então é difícil.

9. Como é seu companheiro? Vocês estão se dando bem?

Eu e meu companheiro somos uma boa dupla! Somos TÃO parecidos! Ele é de Las Vegas, e ambos AMAMOS basquete! Temos muito em comum e ele me disse que, em 14 meses que está na missão, eu sou um de seus companheiros favoritos, porque trabalhamos muito bem juntos.

10. E os membros aí, como são?

Todo mundo é tão bom aqui! Nós temos, tipo, 110 membros! É maravilhoso! Todos são tão gentis e amáveis com os missionários! Na última sexta, no meu aniversário, nós tivemos um show de talentos na igreja e nós missionários dançamos o cha cha para a platéia. Todos amaram, e aumentou ainda mais o amor que eles têm por nós, então foi ótimo!

Nós temos dias incríveis todos os dias e eu estou aprendendo Espanhol pouco a pouco mas estou bem melhor. Eu já ensinei algumas lições e prestei meu testemunho múltiplas vezes. O sotaque argentino é tão difícil de entender e o Espanhol é TÃO formal comparado a Português! Português é bem melhor, porque em Espanhol você tem que ficar colocando palavras antes das outras como “le, la, el...”. É irritante!

Muito obrigado por tudo! O suporte de vocês é maravilhoso e eu sinto falta de todos! É trabalho duro aqui mas vale a pena!

Por favor, enviem cartas sempre! Vocês precisam enviar TUDO para a casa da missão somente. Nós somente iremos lá buscar 2 vezes a cada 6 semanas, então não verei as cartas por um bom tempo. É difícil e triste, mas tudo bem.

We are thrilled to report that your son, Elder Ayres, has finally arrived safely in his mission this morning here in Buenos Aires.  He was picked up at the airport, and after a brief tour of Buenos Aires was brought to the mission home for a luncheon, followed by an interview with the President.  You should expect to hear from your missionary on his next P-day which will be Monday, September 14.  Thank you for your prayers and support."

We just got a call from President David Ayre. He wanted to let us know that Elder Ayres is fine, and report that he was assigned as a companion to Elder Jason Kelly, and is serving in the Constitución area, right at Buenos Aires Capital. It was so neat to talk to him and how he thinks so highly of our son!

Foi ótimo conversar com ele e ver como ele está impressionado com nosso filho!

Atlanta to Buenos Aires - 2nd best moment of Labor Day

Here we go! (Christina writing here again)

We tracked the entire trip from Salt Lake City to Atlanta, Georgia, through FlightAware, also from FlyView phone app. I'm so grateful that technology allows us to follow his flight and see the specifics, and even receive updates and notifications from weather.

As soon he got out of the airplane in Atlanta, he was able to call me.

We talked about a lot of things, temporal and spiritual, and he recited the First Vision in Spanish. This is a miracle itself with the difficulty we have to memorize things. It brought more of the Spirit to our phone call.

It's so hard to think he will be so far away from me for so long, but I have faith Heavenly Father is taking care of him.

In the end of our call, he asked me to find the talk The Character of Christ, by Elder David A. Bednar. He had that talk shown to him last Friday in the MTC and it was so powerful.

Elder Frederico Ayres and 13 other missionaries just landed in Buenos Aires headed to the Argentina Buenos Aires North Mission. Now, he is under Heavenly Father's care, and President and Sister Ayre.

"Fear not, I am with thee; oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid.
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,

(Nós seguimos o avião durante toda a viagem de Salt Lake através do site FlightAware, e também da app FlyView do telefone, que dá pra saber quando o avião levanta voo ou aterrissa.

Assim que ele saiu do avião, ele nis ligou.

Nós falamos sobre muitas coisas, temporais e espirituais, e ele foi capaz de declamar a Primeira Visão, conforme o capítulo de Joseph Smith - História em espanhol inteiro! Isso por si só é um milagre, pois temos dificuldade de memorizar qualquer coisa. E nós sentimos o Espírito tão forte ainda mais mesmo pelo telefone!

É difícil pensar que ele estará tão longe por tanto tempo, mas temos fé que o Pai Celestial irá cuidar dele.

Leaving the MTC - Trip Salt Lake City to Atlanta

Hello all! (Here is Christina writing)

We had the privilege to talk to Elder Ayres (our Freddy!) by phone today, after he left the MTC and went to Salt Lake City airport headed to Atlanta airport in his way to Buenos Aires. I asked him to choose if he wanted to talk in English, Spanish or Portuguese, because I didn't want to cause more confusion with his Spanish. He asked to talk in Portuguese because "he can't and doesn't want to forget it!" He spoke in English with Clair and Portuguese with me. After the great greetings we had, checking how he is doing, making sure his excitement is alive, and that he is happy and focused, our conversation went as follows (we questioned, he answered):

How are you feeling? I’m feeling excited! I can’t wait to go to Argentina and get to work.

How is your health? It’s good so far. I didn’t need any medicine besides some stomach probiotics. (Our followed advice was about which vitamins to take to prevent health problems, besides reminder of how to boil water, how to do the cooking and other things to prevent contamination and other illnesses.)

Are you sleeping well? Yes, I’m just a little tired today because we woke up at 3:00am. We had some friends leaving early and we wanted to say our goodbyes and we are awake since.

Did you gain or lost any weight so far? I’m about the same!

You said you would send a box back home with some things. What did you send home? Yes, I sent one Saturday with some things that were weighting my bags too much or I won’t use, but just those I’m sure I can find there in Argentina or I didn’t really need. Don’t worry!

How are you feeling about going to Argentina? I am feeling good! Some of the missionaries I am traveling with are a bit nervous, because they have no clue what to expect about living there, but we have researched and talked to people that came back from our mission in the MTC, and by what we heard, things there look pretty similar to what we know in Brazil, so I am good because I remember well.

What was the best thing in the MTC? The Spirit! It’s always so strong!

What is the most inspiring thing about your time at the MTC? Besides the Spirit we feel the whole time, the devotionals with the general authorities and every other activity since classes to read our scriptures.

What are some of the great things you've learned so far about having a companion 24/7? It’s nice to be able to help each other with our shortcomings and learn together, share experiences and feel the Spirit.

What service projects have you done? We have had two, and other small ones. One of them was last week. We woke up at 6:00am on a Monday and went to the cafeteria to cook all the food for thousands of missionaries that day.

How are your feet? What about the shoes? My feet are pretty good, I’m using the heaviest Johnson & Murphy to travel and they all fit and feel good. (Our followed advice was a reminder about how to take care of feet and shoes if need to cross flood areas, excessive rain; taking care of blisters etc.)

How are your clothes holding up? Did you get to dry clean your suit before you left? Yes, I did! Just the blue/gray one. I didn’t use the black, so that one I didn’t need to. I’m trying to keep the white shirts collars clean like you taught me. I found out in Argentina we will do our own laundry. (Our followed advice was about how to take care of washing clothes by hand, hanging and ironing if needed.)

Share with us how has your testimony grown since leaving home? Yes, it has grown so much! I have learned so much about the Atonement that I feel so much closer to Jesus Christ, and I’m very grateful for that.

What things you wish you had taken? Do you need anything else? No, I’m good! I have everything I need and more!

So, overall, how was your time in the MTC and how are you seeing your arrival in Argentina? 

This is my first transfer! Six weeks at the MTC were pretty good, now it’s time to move on and get to work!

We talked a lot more about everything else that is going on here and with our family around the world. He asked to everyone, "Please send me letters":)! I will update the addresses here in the blog as soon I get them.

They had also eaten Café Rio at the airport and were planning to eat Panda Express later in Atlanta, "elected for the last American meal before getting to the pampas of Argentina Buenos Aires North Mission, the best mission in the world”! 

My heart is full right now! Please pray for these missionaries with me! 

I will update this blog later and write a second post after I talk to him from the Atlanta airport headed to Buenos Aires tonight.

(Deixando o CTM de Provo - Viagem Salt Lake a Atlanta

Olá a todos! (Aqui é Christina escrevendo)

Nós tivemos o privilégio de falar com Elder Ayres (Nosso Freddy!) ao telefone hoje, após ele deixar o MTC, no aeroporto de Salt Lake City rumo ao aeroporto de Atlanta no caminho a Buenos Aires. Eu lhe perguntei se ele queria falar em Inglês, Português ou Espanhol porque não queria causar mais confusão com o Espanhol que ele precisa. Ele pediu que falássemos em Português, porque “Ele não pode e não quer esquecer!”. Ele conversou em inglês com o Clair e Português comigo. Após externarmos nossa saudade e como estávamos, tendo certeza que ele está feliz, animado e focado, nossa conversa foi a seguinte (nós perguntamos, ele respondeu):

Como você está se sentindo? Eu estou animado! Mal posso esperar para ir até a Argentina e trabalhar.

Como está sua saúde? Está bem até o momento. Eu não tomei nenhum outro remédio além das vitaminas para o estômago. (Nossa conversa continuou com alguns conselhos e lembretes sobre ferver água para tomar, prevenir doenças, cozinhar, contaminações, etc.)

Você está dormindo bem? Sim. Só estou um pouco cansado hoje porque acordamos às 3 da manhã. Nós tínhamos alguns amigos que sairiam mais cedo para viajar, e queríamos nos despedir deles, e estamos acordados desde então.

Você ganhou ou perdeu algum peso? Estou do mesmo jeito!

Você disse que estaria mandando uma caixa pra casa. O que você mandou? Sim, mandei uma sábado com algumas coisas que estavam pesando demais minhas bagagens e que tenho certeza que não vou precisar ou posso comprar lá, não se preocupe.

Como você está se sentindo sobre viajar até a Argentina? Muito bem! Alguns dos missionários que estão viajando comigo estão um pouco nervosos, porque eles não fazem ideia do que encontrarão lá, mas nós pesquisamos e encontramos com pessoas que serviram lá na mesma missão que nós, e pelo que eles disseram, as coisas são similares com o que conhecemos do Brasil, então estou bem porque me lembro de tudo.

Qual foi a melhor coisa do CTM? O Espírito! É sempre tão forte!

Qual foi a coisa mais inspiradora de seu tempo no CTM? Além do Espírito que sentimos o tempo todo, os devocionais com as autoridades gerais e toda e qualquer atividade, desde as classes até ler nossas escrituras.

Quais foram algumas das coisas que você aprendeu até agora sobre ter um companheiro 24 horas por dia, 7 dias por semana? É muito legal ser capaz de ajudar um ao outro com nossas dificuldades e aprender juntos, compartilhar experiências e sentir o Espírito.

Quais tipos de projetos de serviço você fez? Nós fizemos dois e outros menores. Um deles foi semana passada. Acordamos às 6 d amanhã na segunda-feira e fomos no refeitório cozinhar toda a comida para milhares de missionários aquele dia.

Como estão seus pés? E os sapatos? Meus pés estão ótimos. Estou usando o par mais pesado de Johnson & Murphy para viajar e eles são confortáveis. ( Nosso conselho após foi um lembrete sobre como cuidar dos pés e sapatos, também se precisarem cruzar áreas inundadas, excesso de chuva, cuidar das feridas, etc.)

Como estão as roupas? Você conseguiu mandar o terno para lavar a seco antes da viagem? Sim, eu consegui! Apenas o cinza/azul, porque não usei o preto. Estou mantendo os colarinhos das camisas brancas limpos como você me ensinou. Fomos avisados que na Argentina, nós mesmos lavamos nossas roupas. (Nossa conversa após foi um lembrete sobre lavar roupas com tanque e baldes, pendurar em varais e passar a ferro quando necessário.)

Como seu testemunho cresceu desde que você foi para o CTM? Sim, cresceu tanto! Eu aprendi tanto sobre a Expiação e me sinto bem mais próximo de Jesus Cristo, e sou muito grato por isso.

Quais algumas das coisas que você desejaria ter levado? Precisa de alguma coisa? Não, estou bem! Tenho tudo que preciso e mais!

Então, como foi seu tempo no CTM e como você está vendo sua chegada na Argentina? Esta é minha primeira transferência! Seis semanas no CTM foram ótimas, agora é hora de colocar em prática e trabalhar.

Nós conversamos bem mais com ele sobre tudo que estamos fazendo, sobre nossa família ao redor do mundo. Ele pediu que todos possam lhe escrever cartas! Eu vou atualizar os endereços aqui no blog assim que os conseguir.

Week 5: Last week at the MTC!

(Semana 5: Última semana no CTM!)

Hello!

It’s been a pretty long week but it’s been good. It’s been one of the hardest though. I did get my travel plans on Friday so I’ll be telling you about that later. Thanks for all the letters, "dear elders" and stuff! I really love it all! 

Alright! So yesterday we had another Apostle come and talk to us! It was Elder Dallin H. Oaks! He gave a great talk about "Preach My Gospel" and being a missionary. Something they definitely make you realize here is that the Spirit is the teacher and not you. Your, well, my job is to be obedient and be ready for when those promptings come. I loved all he said. It was great!

This week we also watched this super powerful video called "Missionary Work and the Atonement."

Our teacher, Hermano Weeks, showed it to us from YouTube and it was so great! It’s an 11 minute long video and it starts with President Henry B. Eyring talking, then it goes to Elder Holland. It was really motivational. Almost everyone in the room was crying. 

It teaches that salvation is never, and should never be, easy. For us, as missionaries, it’s definitely going to be hard, but we can never give up. We can never stop working, because when we stop and complain about how hard it is or how bad we feel we need to remember that we weren’t the first ones to say that. Christ said "take this cup away from me" because even for Him, the son of God, it was hard. This is really motivational and I loved every second of it!

Alright! I also got my travel plans!!!! I’m so excited to finally go! But what’s scary is that I’m gonna be the travel leader! So I’m in charge of taking 14 missionaries to Argentina! That’s stressful, but apparently I’m going to be taught about how to do it, so wish me luck. 

I need to be at the travel office here at the MTC at 9:30 in the morning, so it’s not as early as I thought. 

Our flight leaves around 1:45 pm from SLC to Atlanta, then we will leave Atlanta Monday night. We will be flying all night long until we get to Buenos Aires, Argentina, which should be around 9:00 am on Tuesday.

We’ll get straight to work that morning, and I probably will be able to email on the next p-day.

Esta semana foi bem longa mas foi boa. E uma das mais difíceis. Eu recebi meu plano de viagem na sexta, mas eu lhe contarei mais adiante. Obrigado por todas as cartas, “dearelders” e as caixas! Eu realmente amei tudo!

Ok, então ontem nós tivemos outro apóstolo que veio falar conosco. Era Elder Dallin H. Oaks! Ele deu um ótimo discurso sobre “Pregar Meu Evangelho” e ser um missionário. Uma coisa que definitivamente aprendemos aqui é que o Espírito é o professor, não você. O seu, ou seja, o meu trabalho é ser obediente e estar pronto para quando o momento que o Espírito nos tocar vier. Eu amei tudo o que ele disse, foi muito bom!

Esta semana nós também assistimos um vídeo super poderoso chamado “Trabalho Missionário e a Expiação”.

Nosso professor, Irmão Weeks, nos mostrou do YouTube e foi maravilhoso! É um vídeo de aproximadamente 11 minutos e começa com Presidente Henry B. Eyring falando, e depois Elder Holland. Foi realmente motivador, quase todos na sala estavam chorando.

Ensina que a salvação nunca é ou nunca deveria ser fácil. Para nós, como missionários, definitivamente será difícil, mas nós não podemos desistir nunca. Nós não podemos parar de trabalhar, porque se pararmos e reclamarmos sobre como é difícil ou como nos sentimos mal, precisamos lembrar que não somos os primeiros a dizer ou sentir isso. Cristo disse “afasta de mim este cálice” porque mesmo para Ele, o filho de Deus, foi difícil. Este vídeo realmente é motivador e eu amei cada minuto dele!

Ok, meu plano de viagem! Estou tão animado para finalmente ir! Mas é assustador porque eu serei o líder da viagem, ou seja, serei responsável por 14 missionários até chegarmos na Argentina! Será estressante mas eu serei ensinado o que precisarei fazer, então me deseje sorte.

Eu preciso estar no escritório de viagens no CTM às 9:30 da manhã, então não é tão cedo como eu pensei que seria.

Nosso voo sairá em torno das 1:45 da tarde de Salt Lake para Atlanta, e sairemos de Atlanta segunda à noite, dia 7 de setembro. Voaremos a noite toda e chegaremos em Buenos Aires em torno das 9 da manhã na terça-feira, dia 8.

Nós iremos trabalhar em seguida após chegarmos naquela manhã, e provavelmente poderei escrever só no próximo p-day.
