Almost New Year!

Hello! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Christmas was awesome! Calling and talking to everyone was so great! It was so weird tho. I was there like "holy crap I'm talking to my family right now" and before I called, I don't know why but I was super nervous! But the call went great and I felt great about it. I didn't really fell that trunky or anything like that, just happy that I could call and talk to you!

 

My companion had a great time talking to his family too. Plus something changed, the night we talked to our families something just happened, because now we are both more focused and working harder. My companion is great and something we have definetly learned these past couple days are that service to your companion is crucial. It builds your relationship and really helps you see what the other one is all about.

 

About the floods in Argentina, no, we dont really have floods. In Buenos Aires it kinda floods when it rains super hard but honestly no, were fine.

 

My plans for the week it's just try our best honestly, because this past week was hard to work, and it was Christmas. Here in Argentina it's now big, and we keep hearing the New Year's is crazier down here, so we are trying to just do the best we can. Like this week because all the members were busy we couldn't really work, we had the lowest numbers I've had in my mission so far and that is sad, and this week is gonna be worse because of new years and everyone drinking or traveling, so we will see how it goes.

3 and 4 - This is me and Elder Erickson, or Zone Leader, and the other is us at the zone leaders pension. the one on the far left is Elder Mella (who sounds like a complete yankee when he talks in Spanish, with all the hard Rs and everything), and the other is Elder Sacripanti. He is pretty funny and a good guy. we started our mission together so we are like brothers! Like really good friends actually too!

5 and 6 - This is me and Elder Santos, another Brazilian from Brasilia! He is awesome, his birthday was like last week and he turned 25! He is an old man! The other is a picture of our zone at the obelisco.

11 and 12 - This is my companion, we were walking down the street when all of a sudden I hear this splat, and I look back and there is pigeon crap all over my companion! hahaha hilarious

They have 8 children, all of them except for the 3 youngest and the parents are inactive members, but with Matias, the one holding the camera in the other picture, getting his mission call to panama, I feel like they will slowly come back to the church!

Olá! Feliz Natal e Feliz Ano Novo!

O Natal foi demais! Ligar e falar com todos foi tão ótimo! Foi estranho um pouco… tipo, eu de repente pensei “Nossa, estou falando com minha família neste momento!” e antes de eu ligar, não sei por que, mas eu estava super nervosa! Mas a ligação foi ótima e eu fiquei feliz. Eu não fiquei saudoso ou triste, apenas feliz que pude ligar e falar com todos vocês!

Meu companheiro também teve uma ligação ótima com a família, e algo mudou na noite que falamos com nossas famílias. Alguma coisa aconteceu, porque agora, nós dois estamos super focados e trabalhando mais que antes. Meu companheiro é ótimo e uma coisa que temos aprendido definitivamente nesses últimos dois dias é que servir nosso companheiro é crucial. Isso constroi nosso relacionamento e realmente nos ajuda a ver o que o outro precisa.

Sobre as inundações na Argentina, não, nós realmente não temos aqui. Em Buenos Aires acontecem algumas só quando chove super forte, mas honestamente estamos bem.

Meus planos para a semana é somente trabalhar o melhor que podemos, porque esta semana passada foi super difícil, e era Natal. Aqui na Argentina é um feriado bem grande, e muitos nos dizem que será ainda mais louco no Ano Novo, então estamos tentando trabalhar o melhor que podemos. A maioria dos membros está ocupada e tivemos os mais baixos números da minha missão até agora, e isso é triste, e parece que essa semana será pior porque todos estão bêbados, viajando... então veremos como será.

The blessings of being a Missionary Momma

Since my son was a very young toddler, he looked forward to serving a mission.  Now, looking back, it seems the Lord was directing and preparing all of us for his service.

The year before his departure, several financial, medical, and other unexpected trials arose. Then, the day we dropped him off at the MTC in Provo and said goodbye for two long years was one of the toughest and heart-wrenching days of my life. Closing our Skype call this Christmas was even harder.

I had worked hard to help him prepare for a mission.  I was so grateful that he made the best choices, but I wasn’t prepared for the experience when he actually left. The inability to communicate with him frequently, the constant reminder of his empty room, and worrying about him were often crushing, and I believe sending off an LDS missionary is really hard for all LDS moms – and dads too, of course.

However, the blessings of seeing a young man set aside the things of the world and sacrifice his life for the Lord, including his personal relationships, interests, and schooling, are just the beginning of the blessings I have received throughout these months he’s been in the field:

1. Our faith is stronger than ever. We are learning and are being tested to put our trust in the Lord a mission is His work and whatever mission policies, living situations for our missionary, and dangerous places he serves are inspired as our son furthers His work.

2. We are more grateful for sweet, tender blessings like technological advances in communication - such as emails every week, occasional pictures of our missionary from the mission president and his wife, and also members in his area, and Skype calls on Christmas and Mother’s Day. Our readily available communication with him through emails and letters helps us to pour out our feelings and even learn a different side of each other.

3. We look forward to and love Mondays (email day), and each email provides a chapter of our son’s experiences.  We learn through inspirational, funny, constructive, and personal stories about ways our missionary has placed his trust in the Lord.

4. We experience many emotions and moments of gratitude when we see his plaque hanging in the church next to the bishop’s office. It’s reassuring to see his face there among all the other missionaries from our ward.

5. We pray for him even in our smallest prayers throughout the day, and this has brought us closer together. We are also humbled to know that other family members and friends are praying sincerely for his protection.

6. We read his stories of how he has helped reactivate more than twenty families so far, performed baptisms and priesthood blessings, and come to love the many members in his area. We are so grateful to those members for all the dinners and other service they provide for our missionary.

7. I have gained a new perspective of the power of the priesthood when he also speaks positively – perhaps to ease my worries – about negative experiences with a companion who doesn’t follow the rules, being chased by a group of drunk guys who threw broken bottles at them, being yelled and sworn at by people who have been offended, and dealing with unmarried couples uninterested in follow God’s commandments, or even drug lords that enslave young people. Knowing that he literally cries for these people, prays for them, and loves them despite their actions teaches me more about humility and submitting to the Lord’s will than anything else.

8. I feel the veil very thin lately. I know we have ancestors beyond the veil who are helping him in this work. I feel inspired and have also restarted searching for a branch of our family that has been really hard to reach.

9. He has so much joy in the work. On our Skype call for Christmas, I asked him if he had developed a testimony that the Lord called him to the right place. He broke into a big smile and shouted “Absolutely!” He continued, “It’s been the best experience of my life. I am so grateful for Jesus and His atonement, the scriptures, our prophet and general leaders, and I’m already dreading the day I will be released. I want to serve God's children forever.”

10. The biggest blessing of all is seeing our son change. He is becoming an admirable young man, strengthening his relationship with Heavenly Father, and discovering His power, and the miracles the companionship of the Spirit can perform in the lives of others.  Seeing him remaining upbeat in the face of trials and spreading the joy of the Gospel is a real miracle in all of our lives.

11. Even if we already knew it, we are learning that if we focus on the difficulties of the experience, we will miss the blessings, and much depends on our attitude.  It’s time to test our faith, knowledge and everything wonderful that we know about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and seal our testimony of Him and His work.

I’m grateful for the honesty we share, for my son’s willingness to serve the Lord, for the compassion I have toward other parents of missionaries under any circumstances, and especially for the love Heavenly Father has for all of us, even for my dear son, in allowing him to have these experiences.

The day we dreamed of happened. We were able to talk to our dear missionary Elder Ayres for a ton of time, and I'm so grateful we could see, hear and learn of him. He was at the Familia "Chavez" home.

A few things we talked about:

• The missionaries are pretty known in the Villas where they work, so he feels safe for that reason, but he also doesn't carry tie pins, camera or other things that might catch other's eyes. His main work is at Villa 21 in Buenos Aires, in the Provincia. 
• He, his companion at the time (Elder Kelly) and a member once got followed by a drunk man that had a taser, but they tried to not demonstrate fear, and the guy turned around laughing and didn't harm them.
• Elder Ayres really enjoys the heat and the humidity they are having in Argentina right now. He has lost around 20lb and want to loose more so he is enjoying the summer. He is also working out a lot with that goal in mind, but he said he is eating well and being hydrated. He just miss having a lot of fruits. 
• He doesn't drink soda, but because the new Argentinian President opening the country for imports, they are starting to have Guaraná in the country, so he might drink that sometimes.
• The mission goal is to have the members involved through references, but in his time so far, he had only 4 Argentinians, because the most are from Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay or other countries.
• Most people work in random stuff in his area. The leadership of his Ward have good jobs and work a lot, so the missionaries make appointments directly with the members.
• He said he is loving personal study and marking his scriptures a lot and this has helped him a lot to have the Spirit and to teach the lessons. He considers himself a "studyholic".
• His best friends in the mission are Elder Kelly and Elder Yeoman, he loves them, his prior two companions.
• His Ward/chapel is called La Boca, the only chapel in Argentina that has an indoor basketball court, so he is pretty excited about it.
• The main religion of the people in Argentina is Catholic, but most are not active. In the Villa 31 where they make divisions some times, they have a lot of Jeovah witnesses and Universal.
• He is feeling very confident with his Spanish and is able to contact and teach people by himself in Spanish.
• One thing he is disappointed is that they have no fruits there, only bananas, oranges and apples.
• They have no time to be bored, they always have a ton to do, but if he has any extra time, he does personal study.
• Although the place is poor, Elder Ayres said he finds the Villa very rich, because they can contact more than 20 people a day, and because their homes are so little they are often outside. Other areas had apartments complex, so he likes this area for that reason as well.

Freddy sent us some pictures - he had around 30 pictures to send, but he was able to send only these, and Monday email will have more:

1. This happened when he needed to go to government office to get fingerprints for his visa, so he took a selfie in the mission home.

2. This is a picture of the Casa Rosada, the White House of Argentina, where the president lives.

3. This is Hermana Sabina, the "mom" of the missionaries. Elder Ayres loves her and gifted her that little mate cuia she is holding, that has a Brazilian flag and say "Thank you for everything".

4. This is the family he was on Christmas eve for dinner. Also, the young man that is sitting in navy shirt opened his mission call and it is to Argentina Bahia Blanca mission, in the south. This is the family where he talk to us today from their computers.

5. Another picture of the family, after the mission call opening. The father served his mission in Portugal, so he speaks Portuguese.

6. This is a picture of his district with the obelisk behind, after recording their part of the Christmas video (that we will get later).

O dia que sonhamos aconteceu! Fomos capazes de falar com o nosso querido missionário Elder Ayres por bastante tempo, e eu sou tão grata que pudemos vê-lo, ouvi-lo e aprender com ele. Ele estava na casa da Família "Chefalsa".

Algumas coisas que falamos:

• Os missionários são bastante conhecidos na Villas onde trabalham, então ele se sente seguro. Por essa razão, mas ele também não carrega os pins na gravata, câmera ou outras coisas que pode chamar a atenção  dos ladrões. Sua obra principal é na Villa 21 em Buenos Aires, na Provincia.
• Ele, seu companheiro na época (Elder Kelly) e um membro uma vez foram seguidos por um homem bêbado que tinha um taser, mas eles tentaram não demonstrar medo, e o cara virou rindo e não os prejudicou.
• Elder Ayres realmente gosta do calor e da umidade que eles estão tendo na Argentina no momento. Ele perdeu em torno de 10 quilos e quer perder mais então ele está aproveitando o verão. Ele também está se exercitando bastante com esse objetivo em mente, mas ele disse que está comendo bem e se hidratando. Ele só sente falta de ter um monte de frutas.
• Ele não bebe refrigerante, mas porque o novo presidente argentino está facilitando a importação, eles estão começando a ter Guaraná no país, então ele irá beber isso às vezes.
• O objetivo da missão é fazer com que os membros estejam envolvidos, através de referências, mas desde que chegou na Argentina até agora, ele teve apenas 4 investigadores argentinos, porque a maioria são de Bolívia, Chile, Paraguai ou em outros países.
• A maioria das pessoas trabalham em coisas aleatórias em sua área. A liderança de sua ala têm bons empregos e trabalhar muito, então os missionários fazem os contatos diretamente com os membros.
• Ele disse que está amando estudo pessoal e marcando as escrituras muito e isto tem lhe ajudado muito a ter o Espírito e ensinar as lições. Ele se considera um "estudanteholic".
• Seus melhores amigos na missão são Elder Kelly e Elder Yeoman, ele os ama, seus dois companheiros anteriores.
• Sua Ward / capela é chamada La Boca, a única capela na Argentina que tem uma quadra de basquete coberta, portanto, ele está muito animado sobre isso.
• A principal religião do povo na Argentina é católica, mas a maioria não são ativos. Na Villa 31, onde eles fazem divisões algumas vezes, eles têm um monte de testemunhas de Jeovah e Igreja Universal.
• Ele está se sentindo muito confiante com o seu espanhol e é capaz de contatar e ensinar as pessoas por ele mesmo agora.
• Uma coisa que ele está desapontado é que eles não têm frutas lá, apenas bananas, laranjas e maçãs.
• Eles não têm tempo para ficar entediado, eles sempre têm uma tonelada de coisas pra fazer, mas se ele tem algum tempo extra, ele faz o estudo pessoal.
• Embora o lugar seja pobre, Elder Ayres disse que ele vê a Villa como muito rica, porque eles podem entrar em contato com mais de 20 pessoas por dia, isso porque suas casas são tão pequenas então às vezes eles sentam lá fora. Outras áreas têm complexos de apartamentos, então ele gosta dessa área por essa razão também.

Hello, Summer!

Thanks so much for everything! I hope everything is going well and happy birthday! I hope you have a great day today and everything goes well. I love you a lot and I’m thankful for everything you do for me! Good luck there in the cold!

I’m doing well out here. It’s starting to get hotter and hotter so I can’t wait for the summer. That way I can lose weight because I’ll be sweating 24/7! But we are doing good, keeping hydrated and trying to stay animated too. With all the holidays happening,  it’s gotten really hard for us to work in the villa because everyone is drinking and smoking who knows what. So it’s been tough, but the members are awesome and are helping us out a ton.

That’s awesome (you got the pictures yesterday from Sister Mercedes)! Yeah, we were eating at their house yesterday and I was like, let’s take a picture so you can send it to my mom! They are the “Familia Moron” and they live like 2 blocks from our house! Hermano Moron makes awesome barbecue and yesterday was just great! So I hope you loved it! I told her that you were gonna cry when you saw them!

 I’m not sure about Hermalinda (Matilde and Tivurcio’s daughter – the couple that got baptized last week) because she has lots of questions and lots of doubts too. and she ended up looking on the internet and she came across things that weren’t true and all that stuff so we did what we could, invited her to pray about the Book of Mormon and about the Church (which she hasn’t done yet) but yeah. We are trying, we have hope but for now it looks like she won’t get baptized. Bummer.

This week I’ve been focusing on personal revelation and also in the proclamation to the family. Personal revelation is amazing and we just have to be ready to receive it! It’s kinda like that one Mormon message with the football team? Where the trainer was ready to give that blessing to the boy who just got struck by lightning. That’s pretty powerful. 

And with the Proclamation to the Family, that’s awesome doctrine that we have. I can see the power that it has out here in our ward, because right now we are in the middle of a couple families that are struggling with their marriages. So that led me to study the Proclamation and teach it to members and investigators.

About our mission activities

Every month or so we have a zone meeting where we talk about goals, our areas, and how we can improve as missionaries. We do the same thing in district meeting but it’s more personal. Our Sundays schedules are reversed so we have priesthood at 9 then at 10 we have gospel principal’s class, then at 11 is when we have sacrament meeting. So that’s pretty interesting to get used to.

On p-days we do lots of different things, like today Elder Kelly and some people in his zone are coming over to play basketball! And next week me and my companion are going to the Boca Juniors stadium to go check it out! So wait up for those pictures! I think you might get them in like 2 weeks because I write first but yeah, that’s gonna be awesome. Sometimes we do things with the zone on p-day but there’s not like a format for it. It’s random, like “hey this p-day we are gonna play soccer, or make tacos or something…”

I found this quote,

Elder Holland said this in the last Conference and it’s so true! Thank you so much for being my mom! I love you!

Elder Ayres

Pics 1 and 2 - Did I ever tell you I live like super close to a Jewish synagogue? Because I do! We pass it every month when we have to go pay the bills and I finally got a picture of it! It’s awesome! It’s about 8 blocks from our pension. There are always lots of people walking around using the little hats too.

Eu estou bem aqui. Está começando a ficar mais e mais quente, então eu mal posso esperar pelo verão, assim eu posso perder peso, porque eu vou estar suando 24/7! Mas estamos indo bem, mantendo-nos hidratados e tentando ficar mais animado. Com todos os feriados acontecendo, fica muito difícil para nós trabalharmos nas Vilas, porque todo mundo está bebendo e fumando sabe-se lá o que. Então tem sido difícil, mas os membros são incríveis e estão nos ajudando demais.

Isso é incrível (que você conseguiu imagens de ontem da Irmã Mercedes)! Sim, estávamos comendo em sua casa ontem e eu estava tipo, 'vamos tirar uma foto para que você possa enviá-la para a minha mãe!' Eles são a "Familia Moron" e vivem há 2 quarteirões da nossa casa! Eu não tenho certeza sobre Hermalinda (filha de Matilde e Tivurcio - o casal que foi batizado na semana passada), porque ela tem muitas perguntas e muitas dúvidas também. e ela acabou procurando na internet e se deparou com coisas que não eram verdadeiras e outras coisas do tipo, e nós fizemos o que podíamos. convidando-a a orar sobre o Livro de Mórmon e sobre a Igreja (que ela não tem feito ainda ) mas sim. Estamos tentando, temos esperança, mas por agora parece que ela não vai ser batizada.

Esta semana eu tenho estudado sobre revelação pessoal e também a Proclamação da Família. A revelação pessoal é incrível e nós apenas temos que estar prontos para recebê-la! É como aquela mensagem para os jovens com o time de futebol, quando o instrutor estava pronto para dar uma bênção no garoto que acabou de ser atingido por um raio. Isso é muito poderoso. 

E a Proclamação da Família, que é doutrina incrível que nós temos. Eu posso ver o poder que ele tem aqui em nossa ala, porque agora estamos no meio de algumas famílias que estão lutando para manter seus casamentos. Então isso me levou a estudar a Proclamação e ensiná-la aos membros e pesquisadores.

Sobre nossas atividades de missão

Cada mês ou transferência nós temos uma reunião de zona onde falamos sobre os objetivos, as nossas áreas, e como podemos melhorar como missionários. Nós fazemos a mesma coisa na reunião de distrito, mas é mais pessoal. Nossos horários de domingo são invertidos por isso temos Sacerdócio às 9, em seguida às 10 temos classe de Princípios do Evangelho, e às 11 é quando temos nossa Reunião Sacramental. Então, isso é muito interessante para se acostumar.

Nos p-days fazemos um monte de coisas diferentes, como hoje Elder Kelly e algumas pessoas em sua zona estão vindo para jogar basquete! E na próxima semana eu e meu companheiro estaremos indo para o estádio do Boca Juniors para conhecer! Então espere por essas fotos! Eu acho que você as verá tipo em 2 semanas porque eu escrevo primeiro e depois é que vamos lá, mas sim, vai ser incrível. Às vezes fazemos as coisas com a zona nos p-days, mas não algo que tenha um formato fixo. É aleatório, como "hey este p-day vamos jogar futebol, ou fazer tacos ou algo assim ..."

Fotos 1 e 2 - Eu já lhe contei que eu vivo super perto de uma sinagoga judaica? Porque eu moro! Nós passamos por lá todos os meses quando precisamos ir pagar as contas e eu finalmente tirei uma foto do lugar! É incrivel! É cerca de 8 quarteirões da nossa pensão. Há sempre muita gente andando por l usando os chapéus pequenos também.
